Recycling

Recycling Process - PET is recycled through mechanical recycling or de-polymerisation. During mechanical recycling bottles or preforms are shredded into flakes. Flakes are subsequently washed and are ready to be used as such or blended with virgin polymer for use in other applications. The de-polymerisation process breaks-up the polymer molecule. The final product is comparable to the virgin resin. Currently, the main outlet for recycled PET is the fibre market. Polar fleece for example is made out of recycled PET. Other applications include strapping, sheet and even building material.
Recycling initiative to clean up SA (PlanetSave.com) - The venture, supported by Coca Cola's southern and east Africa division, Sans Fibres, Boxmore Plastics International, Plastics Federation of SA and Megatrade International SA, hoped to recycle 40 percent of the country's PET products.
